Hi:
It's interesting reading people's budgets. I'm a very budget-conscious
person. I see that shampoo and toiletries can take up a fair chunk of the
budget.
I just thought I'd mention something I've been doing the last couple of
months (an idea I got from a local homeschooling group, although we don't HS
any more), more to eliminate the amount of chemicals I expose my body to,
but also to cut down on costs somewhat. I buy baking soda in bulk. It is
great for cleaning, washing clothes. But...instead of shampoo, I wet my hair
first, and work some dry baking soda (dip my damp fingers into a small
bowlful) into my hair and scalp, then rinse it off with warm water. My hair
is squeaky clean after I do this. I have short, straight brown hair, and I
tend to oily hair, so this might not work for everyone. Also, Vancouver's
water is very soft, so that makes a difference. I went to Vancouver Island
over Easter and tried it there, where the water is hard, and it didn't clean
as well, my greasy hair made me look like a drowned rat :-(. But it might be
worth a try.
I've heard that some people even give up shampoo completely, just rinsing
with water. Apparently it can take a month or so for your scalp to stop
making so much oil to compensate, but eventually it evens out. Dh was not
enthusiastic when I told him about this (the no shampoo idea), saying
"please wait until after we visit my parents at Easter", but he hasn't
noticed that I look any worse using baking soda. I use it for the 3yo, but
not the older 2 yet, as they do their own hair and I haven't had the time to
try it with them. Eventually I hope to have the courage to go no shampoo,
maybe I'll get a brush cut first #:-).
Take care. Theresa (in Vancouver, Canada)
