N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC)
From OnibasuWiki
Summary
- The use of NAC is dependent on plasma cysteine status. If plasma cysteine is low, NAC will generally help (although not always). There is no need to wait for chelation to use NAC if plasma cysteine is low, contrary to the ARI and DAN! protocol. See http://onibasu.com/archives/am/131488.html, http://onibasu.com/archives/am/81131.html
- Cysteine is more effectively raised by increasing dietary intake of sulfury foods rather than taking NAC. http://onibasu.com/archives/am/131960.html See also cysteine status for a sulfur food list.
- NAC is not a chelator. http://onibasu.com/archives/am/40056.html, http://onibasu.com/archives/am/115789.html
- NAC can be used during chelation rounds. http://onibasu.com/archives/am/96017.html
- Injections of NAC are never a good idea. Any rise in glutathione production would be short-lived, and the chances of adverse effects are great. Glutathione is always depressed in people with oxidative stress and illness. http://onibasu.com/archives/am/112337.html
- Oral NAC is well-absorbed. http://onibasu.com/archives/am/137542.html
- Symptoms of NAC when it is given to someone who does not need it are the same as sulfur food (thiols) given to those with high cysteine status: "Worsening of coordination, depression/lack of energy, being on an emotional roller coaster (a couple of hours of excitement and euphoria after each NAC dose, followed by a depressed, tired crash)." http://onibasu.com/archives/am/40863.html
- NAC will not increase the excretion of mercury when chelating. http://onibasu.com/archives/am/147573.html (Neither will taurine) http://onibasu.com/archives/am/124129.html
- NAC can be taken with meals. http://onibasu.com/archives/am/141465.html
- "Reasonable amounts of NAC are up to maybe 20 mg per pound of person, 10 or less is unlikely to cause problems IN PEOPLE LOW IN CYSTEINE. Any amount of NAC is likely to cause problems in those high in cysteine." Also mentions excessive NAC will cause problems even if low cysteine. http://onibasu.com/archives/am/115763.html
- NAC should be taken frequently during the day. http://onibasu.com/archives/am/115789.html
- NAC dosages: for a 45 pound child: 200-400 mg 3-4 times a day. Does not taste good. http://onibasu.com/archives/am/41630.html Or with 100mg capsules, 1 or 2 capsules several times a day, with food: http://onibasu.com/archives/am/137654.html
- NAC (and anything else that is sulfury) will increase yeast. Usage of thiols like NAC is dependent on how much you need them versus how much trouble yeast causes. http://onibasu.com/archives/am/116061.html
- NAC is made from animal hair. http://onibasu.com/archives/am/139460.html
- Clarification of statement in Amalgam Illness where he suggests taking NAC when there is insufficient glutathione conjugation - http://onibasu.com/archives/am/128360.html
