About Us

So What Is This About?

There is clearly a need for a better search engine for Yahoo! groups. This project was conceived after the frustration of searching Yahoo! groups and the impossibility of finding anything in groups with large archives.

We know that many Yahoo! group members were also frustrated with Yahoo! search engine's interface and thus the idea for an archives search tool was born.

Onibasu was created as a non-profit site for the benefit of the community of select Yahoo! groups. We are not trying to run the site as a business and we are not affiliated with Yahoo! or any other company. Our intention is to offer Onibasu as a free service because we believe people would benefit from Onibasu's search engine capabilities and user-friendly interface.

Other than mentioning this service on a handful of groups, we are not advertising Onibasu and have no plans to extend the services to every Yahoo! group. That would really kill our server! However, we rely on word-of-mouth to spread the news about Onibasu to other groups. We are open to suggestions about adding other groups, but we are limited by the resources we have. We may also drop groups that aren't getting search traffic to make room for other groups.

Committment

Onibasu is currently being hosted on our home server. It is a free service and we will always keep it that way. If there is enough demand in the future to expand to more groups than we can currently handle, we may ask for donations. However we don't anticipate that this will happen, and we would like to put off any financial assistance until absolutely necessary.

Update October 2006: Due to a recent hardware failure, we are running on a backup server. We are running ads on the site to offset the cost of a new server.

What's With The Name?

Ah! Thought you'd ask about that...

Onibasu, pronounced as {oni-ba-su}, is Japanese for prickly water lily. We thought the name was easy to remember and decided to stick with it.
